Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That
As we round out the blog o' books this week is a collection of this and that from Barnes &Noble. I went to a B&N outside of my hometown and found the collection to be more comprehensive. There are so many interesting books out there and just not enough time to read them all! This weeks collection is subtitled "judging a book by it's cover". I chose books based on covers that peaked my interest.
The Black Friend on Being a Better White Person
Frederick Joseph
"The Black Friend: On Being a Better White Person" offers a candid exploration of race relations and provides practical advice for white individuals seeking to understand and combat racism more effectively.
This book struck me as an enlightening and important read. It looks like a good "start" toward moving toward stronger race relations and a better understanding of the black experience. As adults we are life learners and there is plenty of room for growth. This book could be an essential companion to grow and understand.
What the Fact?
Dr. Seema Yasmin: Finding the Truth in All the Noise
Yasmin debunks common myths and misconceptions using scientific evidence to clarify and correct misunderstandings in everyday life.
We are living in a new era of information. A time that no one have every experienced and have no guidebook to support us. Yasmin's book may be the guidebook we are looking for. As a parent of teens I see so often how they believe everything without fact checking or questioning the validity of the source. This book is on my list for sure as a librarian and a mom!
Where You See Yourself
Claire Forrest
"Where You See Yourself" is a coming-of-age novel that follows a teenager with a disability as she navigates self-discovery, personal challenges, and the pursuit of her dreams.
Disability is a sub-genre I need to continue to educate myself in. This book is an opportunity for a windows and mirrors addition to the collection. The protagonist navigates the college decision process while also finding a place for herself in the collegiate experience. "Where You See Yourself" is an #ownvoices book and I look forward to reading it.
