READ ALL ABOUT IT!

Back to Barnes and Noble for this weeks blog adventure. I was a bit disappointed by the one shelf of non-fiction for YA readers. The titles they did have were intriguing, but the selection was limited.  Loving vs. Virginia Patricia Hruby Powell "Loving vs. Virginia" explores the landmark Supreme Court case that struck down anti-miscegenation laws, highlighting the legal and personal struggles of Richard and Mildred Loving in their fight for interracial marriage equality. The set-up of this book looks like a page turner! The story is written in a prose type format that propels the story forward. The content of interracial marriage is an important piece of American history to explore. Some romance <3  This week's book are from Barnes and Noble.  The Sky Blues Robbie Couch "The Sky Blues" by Robbie Couch is a heartfelt coming-of-age novel about a high school senior who, while navigating the complexities of his senior year and his own identity, organizes a promposal to his crush that sparks both personal revelations and a broader acceptance of his true self. My teenager just read this book and gave it a solid 4 stars. It highlight LGBTQ characters without making it their whole identity. It also includes a promposal!  Scaredy Cat Reviews This week I perused the YA section at the local library where I tutor. There was no genrefication happening in this space at all. 😐 I know not all libraries are created equal but locating Horror/ Mystery books was a bit tricky here. One takeaway though is that in some cases, you can judge a book by it's cover. The horror books have fonts and cover styles that scream "I'm scary. Read me if you enjoy your heart in your throat". Their Vicious Games Joelle Wellington Adina Walker is blacklisted from all Ivy League colleges due to a fight at her prep school.  She must compete in The Finish to regain her future.   "The Finish's stakes aren't just make-or-break...they're life-and-death".  This book grasped my attention with the boarding school themes. YA Science Fiction and Fantasy  I enjoyed browsing the YA Science Fiction and Fantasy section at Barnes & Noble this week. Sci Fi and Fantasy aren't my usual cup of tea, but I enjoyed these few sips.  It also excited me for freshening this section in my middle school library. The Lore Olympus  Rachel Smythe  Lore Olympus is a modern retelling of Greek mythology centered around the romantic and tumultuous relationship between Hades and Persephone, set against a backdrop of drama, intrigue, and divine politics.  This book was originally a webtoon comic. I truly enjoy when authors who create for fun become published! I feel like I can do a little happy dance for them. This graphic novel retelling looks like a fun and fast read! I think it would be a wonderful choice for a reluctant reader who then might turn to more information on Greek mythology or perhaps pursue other fiction based on mythology.
